THE COMPANY
Atom Sciences, Inc. (ASI) is a privately held, high-tech
corporation located at 114 Ridgeway Center, Oak Ridge, Tennessee,
37830-8810 USA. The company was incorporated in January of 1981
to commercialize Resonance Ionization
(RI), a laser-based technology initially developed at Oak Ridge
National Laboratory by Dr. G. S. Hurst and coworkers. The initial
work in characterization of materials
has expanded to include biotechnology
applications of RI and this has further led to non-RI
biotechnology projects.
MANAGEMENT
Tom J. Whitaker, Ph.D., President &
CEO - Dr. Whitaker received his Bachelors degree
from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX, with
a triple major in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. He
obtained his Masters in Physical Chemistry from Princeton
University and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University
of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Whitaker was Manager of the Atomic
and Molecular Spectroscopy Section at Battelle's Pacific
Northwest Laboratory in Richland, WA before joining Atom Sciences
in 1992. Dr. Whitaker is currently serving on the board of the Tennessee
Biotechnology Association.
KEY SCIENTIFIC STAFF
Richard A. Hurt, Ph.D., Staff Scientist and Principal
Investigator - Dr. Hurt received his bachelors degree in Biochemistry at
the University of Tennessee, and received his Ph.D. from the Department of
Microbiology under the mentorship of Dr. Stuart Riggsby. Prior to joining Atom
Sciences in 2001, Dr. Hurt completed his postdoctoral work under the direction
of Dr. Jizhong Zhou in the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National
Laboratory.
